Interview on November 29th, 2006

Name: Gregory Malcolm JosephShades

Date of Birth:
23 july nineteen sumpty-sumpting

What is your favourite colour?
any shade of blue that isn’t found on a swatch

Favourite artist(s)… local or otherwise?
Hokusai

In a nutshell, what do you do?… what medium… and how would you describe your genre?…
i make images that hopefully make you act on an urge, latent or otherwise.
i use pencil, pen, paper and a computer.
i am a graphic designer & illustrator.

How did you first get an interest in art?
i wanted to make magazine ads since i was in primary school. pretty scary that i knew that back then, isn’t it? i was always drawing in my school books. i never thought of myself as highly original or creative in the conventional way, i found joy and inspiration in taking what already existed and making it different, sometimes better suited in another form, light or media – still struggling with the legitimacy of that as an art as opposed to a method. whatever clicks your clock, right?

Where/How did you learn?
went to univ., majored (cum laude) in mass comm., specialised in advertising, with an incomplete minor in fine arts.

A brief history of your career…
made my ‘millions’ as a light and rigging technician for touring bands in the states, then bounced about a few agencies in florida and trini. now holding a space in st. lucia

What are some of your current art projects, personal or otherwise?
projects sounds so formal. even at the agency i never take work too seriously. it’s just work, not life. always looking for something different to do with my art/method… where ever that avenue may be.

What are some of your upcoming projects, personal or otherwise?
see above

Hobbies?… What do you do for kicks?
surfing, scuba diving, motorcycles, parkour, anything outdoor action related

What’s your favourite food?
sushi

If you could be any animal, what animal would you be and why?
human – it’s been a lifelong goal of mine.

Okay and finally… what are your long term career/life ambitions?
personal: always be happy, be the kind of husband and parent (when the time comes) my grandparents would be proud of, travel as often as i did when i was younger.
professional: maybe run a creative boutique for clients who don’t like to be tied to the formula, be a master diver in a scuba shop, learn to use the shift key consistently.

Thanks a lot… is there anything else you’d like to add?
one day i want to press my “reset” button and see what happens.

Based on a November 29th, 2006 interview. View some of Gregory’s past work.
