Nadia Huggins

Interview on April 3rd, 2008

Name: Nadia Simone HugginsCraftedDreamsOfTheChild

Date of Birth: January 28th, 1984

What is your favourite colour?
Blue because its such an easy colour to work with and its generally easy on the eyes and emotions. I love grey also but never really get to do very much with it.

Favourite artist(s)… local or otherwise?
Salvador Dali, Victor Vasarely, M.C Escher, Misha Gordin, Gregory Colbert, Adam Gault,

In a nutshell, what do you do?… what medium… and how would you describe your genre?…
I’m a graphic designer, photographer, video editor, lover, sister, daughter, aunt. I think all of these go hand in hand.
My medium? Photoshop, my camera and too may cigarettes.
As far as my photography goes I guess I would classify it under conceptual, emotive and some slightly erotic.
My design work has a split personality sometimes sleak and clean, sometimes dirty and damaged.

How did you first get an interest in art?
I was born into it really, my father was an architect and my mother sews, I’ve been lucky to have such a nurturing environment… lego, lots of paper, sand, drawing in Paint on my father’s computer.

Where/How did you learn?
In essence I’m self taught…
My dad always had some new point and shoot camera that I used to want to mess around with. I started seeing things differently though when one of my close friends got a 35mm and some black and white film and we used to mess around with it. Then I got my own camera eventually and took it with me everywhere and tried shooting new things everyday.

A brief history of your career…
Caught a vapse one day and decided to apply for a job with a video production company. It was the first time I ever used photoshop, a video camera, and a Mac. Spent a lot of time learning motion graphics, and editing on photoshop. I was a camera operator so that opened me up to a better understanding of lighting and composition.

What are some of your current art projects, personal or otherwise?
Honestly, I havent had the inspiration to do anything personal for a while now…except trying to build my personal website…I’m just trying to get a few things in place before I can start doing some proper design work on it.
Everything else has been the usual; billboards, logos, newspaper ads etc.

What are some of your upcoming projects, personal or otherwise?
I have a photo series I would really love to get started on but I need to build a few things first and I need to find a bold male model.
Also I’d like to do a short film.

Hobbies?… What do you do for kicks?
Recently I got back into football, I used to play it everyday on the beach when I was younger… Now I’m training with a girls team, its nice to come home with bruises again. Oh yeah and squash. I’m trying to get back into shape and feel less horrible about myself and my new found laziness.

I like movies. I rewatched all the seasons of six feet under recently and I’m finding it difficult to be interested in anything else right now…So I might just end up watching the seasons over again.

Limin with friends. Eating healthy with them. Nagging them about how we all need to quit smoking now that we’re making an effort to eat healthy.

And of course music. Stealing it, listening to it, playing it.

What’s your favourite food?
My Mother’s Sunday cooking. Nothing specific really. Just the feeling I get in my tummy when I eat her food.

If you could be any animal, what animal would you be and why?
A liger. Cuz they got skillzzz.

Okay and finally… what are your long term career/life ambitions?
Eventually I’d like to have my own Studio specializing in print, television, web, audio…the full works.
Also I’ve always had a bit of interest in doing Concert Visuals. Something I hope I can at least get a taste of in the future.

Many thanks… anything else you’d like to add?
Good thing this planet sucks or else we’d all fall off…
